The SiLEAN project is making strides in developing sustainable alternatives to indium-containing contact layers and silver metallization in silicon heterojunction solar cells. A key focus of the project is to replace indium tin oxide with boron-doped zinc oxide, applied using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Additionally, silver is being replaced with screen-printed or plated copper for metallization, providing a more cost-effective and resource-efficient solution.
In a recent milestone, the project partners successfully fabricated and shipped early-stage test cells featuring zinc oxide and copper. These cells will undergo testing and potential adaptation for interconnection in module applications, marking an important step toward achieving the project’s sustainability goals.
